OK If you are staying in Bangkok for that long I suggest the Bel Aire Princess hotel. Its on Soi5 Sukhumvit. Across from Nana Plaza. This is by far the best area to stay in for nightlife, shopping and go-go bars. As for bringing money I always budget myself for £100 a day. This is alot and I always come home with money but there will be nights you will spent a bit.
Might I also suggest that 2 weeks in Bangkok is a long time. If I where you I would do 4 nights in Bangkok max then get a taxi to Pattaya. There you have beaches and 10 times the nightlife of Bangkok. That time of the year the weather will be really good and it will be less busy than dec start of jan.

$140 for a hotel is a lot of money here, you can get a good place for far less then $100. don’t waste your money. Book a place in advance for 2 nights then if you don’t like it move somewhere else. Dec to Feb is the high season at the beach resorts so if you plan to go to these plans you will pay more.

I have been in Thailand thrice. I have try those expensive five star hotel but I prefer to stay on my next visit at Arnoma Hotel located at the heart of the shopping district of Bangkok, just in front of Centralworld Plaza. Arnoma is a four star hotel with five star amenities and I think its only US dollar 60 for twin sharing. This hotel is always full and I have difficulty booking at this hotel, so I prefer you book in advance. I was there just last month and check in at this hotel. The exchange rate when I was there is 3400 baht to 100 US Dollar. Sorry to say that I am not familiar with the exchange rate in Australian Dollar. Just to give you a guide, the foods there are very cheap. You could go to the shopping mall fastfood area with a complete meal of 60 bahts or below per person. You could also buy unisex shirts for less than 100 bahts. Maong pants for 150 bahts, etc. But beware of the foods you eat, most of the foods they serve in fastfoods are very spicy. If I am not mistaken around 80 to 90% are spicy.
